Photos from the second Sharrow Lantern Festival

DP | 05.04.2005 20:49 | Culture | Sheffield

On Sunday night the Lantern Festival wove its magic around the streets of Sharrow, stopping the traffic, drawing people out of their homes, shops and restaurants on to the streets to watch the large procession.

That's not a large chicken...

...it's a small dragon (honest:), otherwise known as the Beast of Peace.

Some hugely impressive stuff, pity doesn't come out too well on the photo's. Huge hugs to everyone involved, was a really good do, specially the putting together of the globe and the fireworks which was ace!

Sharrow Lantern Carnival

08.04.2005 00:58

Jolly big well dones to the Sharrow Lantern Carnival lot(who are the Sharrow Lantern Carnival lot?). Certainly appears to be a colourful and creative do but, in the grand scheme of things......What is it ALL ABOUT? Not being of Sharrow residence, I wonder..is this Creative, imaginative, colourful and peaceful Carnival really a challenge to Footballers wives, Big Brother and all that TV tosh?
Good stuff - gimme some of that good stuff.

Lantern Carnival- an incredible event

08.04.2005 20:35

Are you are kidding? An event like the Lantern carnival (and what an incredible and magical event it was) definately does play a part in the larger scheme of things: had it not existed then it would likely have been another drab evening in front of that TV trash you talk of for many of the people involved. As it was- I've rarely seen an event that brought so many different people from the local area together (both famalies and students), producing a small true moment of that 'community cohesion' which government offices only dream about. And that evening and the bright, creative, energy it brought will stay in the minds of the children and adults involved far longer then any TV programme they might see this week.

So well done to all the people who put in the work to make it happen. I only hope that Peace in the Park in the summer can recapture just a fraction of that magic.

Having said all of this though, I did hear a comment, made by a small group of young people in front of me when arriving into the general cemetary green, clearly local kids, dressed in their urban attire, which put a different perspective on things for me.

"We use it every friday. They just come once a year..."
