Mass callout to help build the climate camp

happy camper | 16-08-2006 21:49 | Climate Camp 2006 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Free Spaces | Sheffield

We are calling for all people who can to arrive in Leeds from Monday August 21 and head to the Common Place, 23-25 Wharf Street, Leeds LS2 7EQ. This is to build all the infrastructure ready to occupy the site. This is a mammoth task and the more people we have the more infrastructure is ready when we occupy the site and the less has to be built there. No DIY knowledge is needed as the highly skilled site practicalities group will be there to make sure everything goes smoothly!

First camp at Snaefell
The Icelandic highlands are the last great expanse of true wilderness left in Western Europe. Now the country's hydroelectric potential has been targeted by multinational corporations, who intend to establish large-scale heavy industry in these hitherto pristine hinterlands. Join the protest camp.

The Street Piano - full story!!

Piano Liberation Army | 07-08-2006 12:31 | Free Spaces | Sheffield

"....Don MacLean famously sang: 'I met a girl who sang the blues/ And I asked her for some happy news/ But she just smiled and turned away. I went down to the sacred store/ Where I'd heard the music years before/ But the man there said the music wouldn't play... And the three men I admire most, the father son and the holy ghost - they caught the last train for the coast, the day the music died'.

But that day never came!! Here's what happened....."

chiapas | 25-07-2006 16:32 | Free Spaces | Social Struggles | Sheffield

Hot on the heels of the proposed development of the General Cemetary is a planning application that has been submitted to build two 5/6 storey blocks of flats, containing 299 bedrooms right next door to Stag Works on John Street in Sheffield. Stag Works is used 24 hours a day by bands and artists to make amazing music, yet the planning application makes no provision for acoustic protection.

Sheffield Street Piano SAVED!!

Piano Liberation Army | 07-07-2006 10:04 | Free Spaces | Sheffield

Sheffield's first free community Street Piano was set to be removed by the City Council. But after a concerted campaign of popular resisdence, the authority has changed its tune. Realising that this piano is a contribution not a threat to neighbourhood life, they have decided: The Street Piano CAN STAY!!

This is a victory for autonomous DIY grass-roots bottom-up initiatives.

Acoustic night
A near complete listing of all the events hosted at Matilda. In addition lots of campaign meetings were held, regular socialising and eating together and artists did art on the top floor! A range of photos that don't capture fully the broad range of stuff that went on, but hope gives a flavour.
