Take Action: Northern Foie Gras Peddlers

NARN | 18-12-2011 22:42 | Animal Liberation | Liverpool | Sheffield

Force Fed 'til Dead - No Excuse!
Foie gras is shunned by many and is even illegal to produce in the UK. Ducks and geese have pipes forced down their throats daily and grain pumped in, with ruptured throats being a common occurance. This method of farming creates an artificially diseased and swollen liver, causing birds to become imobile. When slaughtered, the liver is removed and sold as foie gras.

Foie gras is a delicacy produced by force-feeding ducks and geese until their livers become swollen and diseased. Caged or in pens, these birds never get to see the light of day as they live their short and miserable lives in factory farm sheds.

Sheffield University Occupation: Official Statement on the Court Injunction

@sheffoccupation | 03-12-2011 15:26 | Occupy Everywhere | Education | Public sector cuts | Social Struggles | Sheffield

Sheffield University Occupation has been served with a court injunction which constitutes an attack on the right to protest. The injunction, obtained by the University management, has placed a one-year ban on all protests on University property (which could potentially include picket lines and campaign stalls) that have not been given written permission from the University. It is of course extremely unlikely that they would grant permission for any protest criticising the University over cuts, fees and education reform, hence this constitutes an effective ban on all protest at the University of which management does not approve. This will affect all groups and societies at the University, as well as lecturers and support staff picketing on days of strike action.

Syria: The orwellian "Responsibility to Protect" used to justify all out war

Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya | 30-11-2011 15:06 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Sheffield | World

The concept of “Responsibility to Protect” (R2P) essentially posits that a country’s independence is not a right and can be taken away by the international community when the need arises. The international community under the R2P paradigm has the responsibility to intervene in any independent country in order to protect that country’s citizens.

The Syrian Arab Republic now faces the “Responsibility to Protect” (R2P) as a threat. R2P is being prepped to be wielded as a weapon by Washington and NATO. It is a neo-imperialist device under the cover of sheep’s skin that appropriates the language of humanitarianism. The plan is to oust President Bashar Al-Assad from power and install a new client government in Damascus.

Media lies used to provide a pretext for another "humanitarian war"

Julie Lévesque | 27-11-2011 13:16 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Sheffield | World

The Independent, 19 August 2011
According to numerous reports from the Western media, human rights organisations, as well as the UN, countless peaceful civilians have been killed by the Syrian forces since the beginning of the unrest in the country in mid March. But where do the numbers come from? Many media reports on the alleged deadly repression by the Syrian government fail to mention the sources of their information, which are very often referred to solely as "human rights groups" or "activists":

The reliance of the mainstream media on information emanating from anonymous groups provides a biased understanding of the Syrian protests, which in turn supports the broader objective of destabilizing the Syrian regime. When information from unknown sources pertaining to the death toll is published either by a mainstream media or a recognized human rights group, it is invariably picked up and considered as "factual evidence" by other news sources or think tanks, without further verification. Moreover, in the process the information is subject to further distortion.
