English Defence League ejected from Sheffield Indymedia Meeting

Sheffield IMC | 13.07.2010 21:07 | Anti-racism | Sheffield

The EDL were ejected from a Sheffield Indymedia meeting at around 8:30pm on 13th July 2010.

Around a dozen blokes and one woman entered a meeting of the Sheffield Indymedia collective saying we are the EDL, we are not racists. They were told to leave and a scuffle broke out as they left and tried to snatch the phone that took the attached video.

Here are some stills taken from the film, just to make it easier for people to see them.

The guy in the light jacket is the one taking photos. The one in the camo jacket tries to shield his face from the video.

I'm assuming these are all the EDL people. If not, please remove them.

EDL surveilled too

2 Special Branch cops on political duty left shortly after the EDL

Dunno if they were with the EDL or watching them, but one should never underestimate the power of the state to divide and rule.

questions, not answers

13.07.2010 22:04

A big decision.

What do we WANT (the currently existing) network of sites that is Indymedia to be? Do we want Indymedia to stand for free expression or not? Perhaps it is better if we do away with that, decide that Indymedia should be Leftmedia instead and leave it up to others committed to the orginal Indymedia concept to create a new network "Freemedia" (and perhaps the right wing nuts can create their own "RightThinkingMedia").

ROFLOL been there done that. Back in the 60's at the uni I was at a few of us anarchists organized a "Free U" precisely in protest that the "Free U" in NYC was NOT ideologically free. Please udnerstand, all few of us were "left" anarchists but that did not matter with regard to what was to us a perversion of the concept "free" (BTW; was very successful, evolved into the non-credit short courses later to be found at many American U's).

Understand that many of us well still support an "unfree" Indymedia, just wouldn't look at it the same way.

PS --- only indirectly connected to the story. There might well have been GOOD reasons to kick the EDLers out of the meeting. Behavior for example, or they might have indicated non support for free independent media. My comment is directed assuming that the reason was "wrong thinking". Hell, I think the tinfoil hat conspiracy nuts are wrong thinking; but not that they should be excluded. If we want a FREE media. Maybe we don't (and maybe we shouldn't -- I am posing questions, not answers).

MDN

@MDN: Indymedia isn't supposed to be "free" media...

13.07.2010 22:34

...in the sense that anyone can use it to promote any garbage.

It has always been supposed to be a non-hierarchical alternative to the mainstream media, which means it has a specific set of values. It was never supposed to be unbiased or open to all ideas.

 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/static/mission.html

"While the mainstream media conceal their manifold biases and alignments, we clearly state our position. Indymedia UK does not attempt to take an objective and impartial standpoint: Indymedia UK clearly states its subjectivity."

Are people failing to understand

14.07.2010 08:14

Are people failing to understand that the fact Leeds AFED due to their actions (or lack of them) have given the vile racist scum of The EDL a confidence boost, what ever the problems be with underclassrising.net (there many) but far less than AFED, the lack of security at the meeting in Leeds has placed some very good people at Sheffield Indymedia at risk and perhaps instead of hiding comments that are critical of AFED they need to understand who there true friends are and now stop promoting Sheffield AFED as the only voice of Anarchism here in Sheffield and i re-post this as i feel it is important that people understand the problem and when underclassrising.net say that AFED are like The SWP/UAF there about right..

See  http://sheffield.indymedia.org.uk/2010/07/455467.html have a role in Sheffield Indymedia there lack of action is putting others at serious fucking risk. Its not time that we take the rise of The EDL serious and begin to organise by that means and not place info of meetings in public?

Tommy Robinson and Sheffield Grassing

14.07.2010 09:29

At least five of these fascist losers were with "Tommy Robinson" when he was arrested at the Sheffield Cop Shop before the Bolton demo. Remember what happened, and how, folliowng their "deal" they were treated with kid-gloves at Bolton and the UAF were arrested on trumped-up charges, in return for secret info on some of Britain's most dangerous football hooligans.

Maybe some of these cretins who invaded the Sheffield meeting also followed suit with BNP member Yaxley-Lennon and turned into state sitches for Special Branch.

I wander how the EDL rank-and-file hooligans and bit-part Sun-reading hooligans feel about being shopped to the cops before the World Cup?

Grass Watch

Wasps In The Honey Trap

14.07.2010 10:12

As part of the Tory government's love-in with the likes of the Daily Mail, David Cameron are planning a serious crack down on football hooliganism when the new season begins as part of a law and order vote retainer to ensure the Tories get re-elected in middle england. All of these "proper hooligans" who were enticed to attend EDL events 'cos of the camaraderie, will have a nasty shock coming when the police produce evidence tapes from Wetherspoons toilets hidden cameras etc.

And the EDL think it is the anti-racists who are mugs?

The Casuals United blog keeps on trying to cover up the truth cos Jeff Marsh is in on the plot.

Just a thought:

14.07.2010 10:39

Did it cross anyone's mind to actually discuss politics with these people ? does it cross anyone's lilly white and pure left mind that they might actually wish to understand whats going on and came along expecting to be politically challenged and question their own beliefs ? Are we afraid our arguments are too weak to actually win a discussion or sound convincing.

Just why are Sheffield Indymedia hiding comments from underclassrising.net that makes my last comment crass and out of context?

D.Dave

Well done Sheffield IMC

If you wanted to engage with indymedia, you don't go mob handed, with three times the number, unannounced, to disrupt a meeting.

Snowy from the EDL seemed quite articulate and intelligent. If you want to have a real discussion about how the working class in this country is being destroyed by the state, how opinion and fear is manipulated by the mass media and big money, how working class communities can organise themselves for their best interests, and how we can build solidarity with others; there are plenty of safe channels, like email, bulletin boards where trust and understanding can be built. If you just want to ruck, well we'll see you on the streets. The choice is yours.

RE Redwatch

15.07.2010 14:09

Redwatch is a British website associated with members of the neo-Nazi British People's Party. It publishes photographs of, and personal information about, alleged far left and anti-fascist activists. It typically targets activists in political parties, advocacy groups, trade unions and the media. There used to be a British magazine of the same name, with similar subject matter, associated with Combat 18. The website's slogan is "Remember places, traitors' faces, they'll all pay for their crimes", a quote from neo-Nazi musician Ian Stuart Donaldson.

The information gathered by Redwatch is indexed by cities or regions. Many of the people listed are members of the Anti-Nazi League or other anti-racist or left-wing groups, such as the Socialist Party (UK), the Socialist Party (Ireland), Sinn Féin, Social Democratic and Labour Party, Alliance for Workers' Liberty, Workers' Power (UK) and Socialist Workers Party (Britain). Some Labour Party, Liberal Democrat and Conservative members are also listed. Trade unionists, in particular teachers and journalists, figure prominently in the listings. There are dozens of photographs of anarchists and single-issue protestors. All of these have no context, and much of the information is inaccurate

Just why was you taking images then?

do you have proof that Snowy = John Shaw = guy in photo?

this link mentions John Shaw, 36, from Knaresborough:

this mentions John Shaw, 39, from Knaresborough:
 http://www.dudleynews.co.uk/news/8145411.Men_in_court_for_EDL_rooftop_protest/

Different age but could be a typo. It's quite a common name, too. Is there a picture of the people in the Dudley rooftop protest that would the guy in the picture?

The Hate Mail has a picture of the protest with a masked figure in a camo jacket:
