Sainsburys Blockaded Nationally [updated]

daisy | 02.07.2004 11:54 | Bio-technology | Ecology | Health | Technology | Sheffield

Sainsbury's chilled food distribution centres were blockaded across the country on Thursday in protest against GM feed being fed to dairy cows. Sainsbury’s five biggest UK distribution centres were shut down as evironmentalists and consumers simultaneously blockaded the supermarket chain's chilled-goods depots in London, Liverpool, Birmingham, Bristol and Sheffield. They were chained together through steel tubes, or sat up scaffold tripods, blocking the depot gates. The co-ordinated action was intended to halt distribution of Sainsbury's dairy products that come from cows fed GM animal feed.

The protest follows Sainsbury’s failure to provide non-GM fed milk as standard, despite rivals like Marks and Spencer and the Co-op doing so. The action was taken in solidarity with farmers, demanding they get a fair deal of 2p on the pound for non-GM milk. The coalition of groups campaigning on this issue includes Farmers for Action, the Small and Family Farmers Alliance, The Small Farms Association, the Wholesome Food Association, the Institute of Science in Society, Genetic Food Alert and the Genetic Engineering Network (see GM animal feed campaign PDF). Well done to all involved

Well done to all involved. Brilliant to hear about it. Another fine set of actions with well practised and finely tuned tactics - Delia would be proud.

This must have cost Sainsburys dear and the police looked like fools with GM egg on their faces to have had some kind of advanced warning (remember your phone etiquette all you active people) and yet still failed to prevent the actions from taking place successfully.

This kind of direct action restores my faith (a little) in the whole activist 'scene'. It is an action with a very specific purpose, a clear aim and apparently perfectly executed unlike most of the so-called actions that take place these days that seem to be little more than conflict with cops and people trying to find some kind of action for the sake of doing an action rather than meeting a need in relation to a campaign.

Long may the humble scafold and arm tube piss of the machinery of capitalism.

Jolly good show I say!

The Land is Key.

Until we resolve the complex issues around the land, rural issues, and the confusing wild card element of class, this country will be divided.

Boycott Sainsbury's Own Brand Milk, Cheese, Yoghurt, Cream and Ice Cream.

Complain to the Manager or at the Customer Services Desk. Or ring the ‘customer care line’ on 0800 63 62 62.

Tell Sainsbury’s National Director to pay farmers a fair price for their milk. Demand that they give a final phase-out date for all GM feed.

Write to:
Justin King, Group Chief Executive,
J Sainsbury plc,
33 Holborn,
London.
EC1N 2HT

Don’t take no for an answer.

Five years ago Sainsbury’s tried to sell GM food, but when their customers complained, they eventually removed the GM ingredients from their shelves. Public opinion has also recently stopped the commercial growing of GM crops in the UK. We can stop the threat of GM here and elsewhere in the world if we all speak out.

This leaflet was produced by a coalition of independent farming, science and consumer groups, including Farmers for Action, the Small and Family Farmers Alliance, The Small Farms Association, FARM, the Wholesome Food Association, the Institute of Science in Society, Genetic Food Alert and the Genetic Engineering Network.

In 2001, Sainsbury's promised to "phase out the use of GM feed to the animals which produce their meat and dairy products" but tons of GM animal feed are still being shipped into the UK to feed the animals that supply the dairy products in this supermarket.
Genetic engineering is a totally new way of creating living things. It involves taking
part of the genetic blueprint from one species, such as a type of soil bacteria, and adding it, along with part of a virus gene, into an unrelated species, such as maize.

Most GM crops are engineered to be resistant to the company’s own weedkiller, so they can be sprayed with more chemicals while they’re growing. GM pollen carries an unpredictable living pollution that reproduces itself and cannot be seen or contained.

Despite the claims from biotech corporations that GM is needed to feed the hungry, GM has not increased yield, and we already produce one and a half times the food needed to feed the world. GM seeds are patented and give corporations huge control over the food supply.

Hundreds of thousands of poor farmers in Argentina have already been driven off the land to make way for GM agriculture.

Sainsbury’s don’t need GM feed imports to produce their food.

Marks and Spencer and the Co-op both sell non-GM reared meat and dairy as standard.

At present, the only way you can be certain of avoiding GM fed dairy products in Sainsbury’s is to buy organic.

The Food Standards Agency maintain that genes from GM feed do not end up in milk. This statement is deceptive, as no one is claiming that they do. The problem is that there have been no independent safety tests to find out what effect eating GM may have on cows, on their milk, or on the people that drink it.

“As a scientist, I wouldn’t drink milk from cows fed GM maize with the present state of
knowledge”
Prof. Bob Orskov OBE, Director International Feed Resource Unit in Aberdeen

In 1990, John Gummer, the Agriculture Minister, assured farmers and consumers that it was 'perfectly safe' to feed sheep brains to cattle.

Both farmers and consumers paid the cost of the resultant BSE disaster. Now the Food Standards Agency are assuring farmers and consumers that it is perfectly safe to feed GM soya and maize to cattle.

Sainsbury’s milk purchasing policies are also hurting UK farmers. The price farmers get for milk has dropped to about 5p a pint, while the price Sainsbury’s sell it to you has risen to 29p a pint.

“Sainsbury’s suppliers now pay farmers less than their production cost for their milk. If this doesn’t change soon, thousands more small farmers will go under. Buying GM animal feed contributes to the devastation of farmers in places like Argentina. We don’t want to use it. We need Sainsbury’s to pay us a fair price for GM free milk”
John Sherrell, farmer, Devon

Fifty years ago, farmers got about half of every £1 spent by shoppers - today they get less than 8p in the £1. As a result an average of 11 farmers go bust every day and 1 commits suicide every week.

“Kill the Farmer, and you kill the countryside.”
John Sanderson, farer, Suffolk

Tune in Lock on

04.07.2004 02:16

Are the english fond of lock ons? Maybe, at least in some sectors of the activist 'community'. Lock-ons in this country can be extremely effective. We have a certain privilege in this country that we can exploit our vunerabilty in true gandhi style whereas in some other countries, it is understandable impossible or stupid to consider such tatics.

Here we can usually expect that the authorities will have to deal will us as humans and spend considerable time either negotiating or cutting us out. In other countries you might be tortured, mutalatated or killed - so obviously not much use as a tactic. Even in the UK it is not unheard of for police to attempt to torture people out of lock-ons (especially in regard to animal rights actions, which for some reasons seem to be seen as very different to most other campaign areas by the police). Of course such treatment offers opportunity to sue the police and that perhaps tempers the overtly violent responces.

Perhaps since we live in such a 'privileged' situation, we should take full advantage of it. Some might go as far as to say that it is in fact our duty to take advantage of our privileged position to do stuff that might not be possible or sensible elsewhere in the world. If this is the case then perhaps the brits are not yet using these and similar tactics as much as they could.

The times are changing but as it stands we in this country can get away with stuff that would not even be considered elsewhere. In this light I think it suprising just how few such actions actually take place here. The cop on our shoulder is very effective. Peoples fear prevents them from taking effective action more than the law itself.

Long live the lock-on.

Predictable media response

04.07.2004 12:37

The media coverage of the Sainsbury's blockades was predictably hopeless. Fortunately the action was not primarily for the media. No national paper seems to have covered it at all. No version even mentions fair prices for farmers - a message that was on every banner and highlighted in press releases. Most of the coverage originates from Associated Press - who decided not to even mention GM in their title - Protesters charged with obstruction. They were only interested in the number of arrests - which suggests that their investigative journalism technique is to ignore all press releases, ask the police if there were any interesting stories that night then call Sainsbury's for comments.

In contrast, local protests at supermarkets - especially when they're photogenic or involve farmers - attract lots of media interest from local papers desperate for interesting news. Supermarket actions in the next few days could be a great way to get news of the depot actions into local papers. [eg see: www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2004/07/294383.html ]

yeah, yeah, yeah

all well and good, but there is something about all this that I find deeply objectionable. What is the message this protest is trying to convey here? 'We want our milk to be GM free', it seems to me. There is only a passing mention of any concern in relation to the welfare of the animals that are being exploited here. Organic or non-organic, genetically modified or not, farmers shouldn't be exploiting cattle to produce it, Sainsbury's shouldn't be supplying it and you shouldn't be drinking it. It was never meant for you. If you really care, find another source of 'nutrition'.

Veganism is not the point.

04.07.2004 15:51

You will be suprised to know that many of the people taking part in these actions and organising them, are actually vegan. It may seem strange that vegans would be working with farmers on this issue but this issue is NOT about milk. The issue is about keeping total domination of the food chain out of the hands of the likes of monsanto and bayer. GM will give multinationals complete control and we will all lose.

Strategic alliances with farmers makes sence (even for vegans) as the driving force behind the denaturing of our food and of it's production is the driving force behind the constant cost cutting that forces farmers off the land and animals into factory farm conditions. It might seem strange working with dairy farmers as a vegan but we have far more in common with these people than the CEO of Sainsbury or Bayer etc. Try talking to farmers (and I don't mean in confrontational situations) and you might be suprised.

Animal liberation isn't the be-all and end-all of issues and veganism isn't by itself, a solution to the worlds problems. It's all to easy to lead a junk food, convenience vegan life style while ignoring that fact that the processed packaged soya products most rely on have been grown by expolited people with massive petrolchemical input on land that has been cleared of wildlife and is now being trashed, then the crop is transported most of the way round the world to be processed and driven by truck to be sold to some self-rightious vegan in a supermarket while local shops vanish and low prices prevent farming in this country from being viable.

GM is an issue that we are winning. GM animal fed is currently providing the biotech industry with a financial life line. The supermarkets are the key in this country and public pressure and direct action has a history of being very effective on this matter.

Excellent Action

04.07.2004 18:47

The food economy is the first that needs changing, and supermarkets need stopping.

Food is the one thing that everyone, everywhere, needs every day. This means that even smallest postive changes in the way we grow, distribute and eat food can have huge postive impacts: low organic food production and distribution increases food saftefy, decreases resource use and hence pollution and global warming, generates employment, protects biodiversity and keeps wealth in the local area.

Keep up the good work! :)

Empty Shelves at Sainsbury's Lancaster

05.07.2004 11:29

Last Saturday (3.7.04) saw local people leaflet the lancaster sainsbury's store for the 10th time in three months.

What was different this time was that staff were keen to take leaflets (previously they'd refused to take any), and the manager actually listened to why we were stood outside his store (previously not shown any interest in why we were there, only what he could do to stop us coming in).

Staff must have know something was up, because they were scurrying round trying to make the chilled goods shelves look full. On Fri they were moving goods forward, and by sat they'd given up on that, preferring to leave some chiller cabinets completely empty in order to try to make others look stocked. Even the stocked shelves only had products three or four rows deep. Milk was mainly from Wiseman's Dairy, rather than Sainsbury's own, and they were displaying meat (50% off!) with a best before date of that day - they must have raided the skips to fill the shelves!

The manager was very put out by the suggestion that Sainsbury's were selling milk from cows not fed on GM products - he'd not heard anything about it at all. We pointed out that this proves Sainsbury's can do it if they want to, and that it's no good hiding the new gm-free milk so they can claim later that nobody bought it.

So go and visit your local sainsbury's, have a look to see if they're chilled goods section is still empty, and have a chat with the manager about Sainsbury's new line in milk. their press release: "Sainsbury's to offer customers milk from cows fed on non-gm feed" is on:  http://www.j-sainsbury.co.uk/media/news_view.cfm?article=409

Sainsbury's can't face truth about the depot blockades!!

07.07.2004 16:18

In 1999 the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) reps from every African nation jointly condemned Monsanto's efforts to force GM on Africa. Monsanto urgently called on PR company Burston Marsteller to tackle the crisis. The advice to the whole industry was never to admit that African farmers and leaders opposed GM and to pretend that all the opposition originated from white, middle class Europeans - specifically Greenpeace - who were happy for African babies to die in the interest of their extremist ideology. The biotech industry and their allies have since then blamed every anti-GM protest in Africa and every protest by peasant farmers on Greenpeace. Sainsbury's are now pretending that the joint farmer and activist blockade of their depots was arranged by Greenpeace - see emailed statement below. Greenpeace seem impressed by the action but have had to tell dozens of journalists who called them that this was completely independent from them....

They also can't face the truth that Fair Farmgate Price protestors / farmers have got together with GM protestors as they failed to even admit that the blockades were also about the exploitation of farmers. Looks like they can't admit to the breadth of support for this campaign!

Good that this issue has been highlighted at last!....

12.08.2004 10:53

...for sevaral years I've been wondering about all the crap, GMO based products etc etc that go into all animal feed, (I used to work on farms) not just 'dairy'. The farmers and landowners 'power block' is so strong that this toxic nightmare, and get out clause for monsanto, has been ignored for ages. So it's bizarre, but not of course supprising, to see that 'farmers' at at the forefront of these protests. (sick).

And of course sick is what you'll get if you carry on eating this shit. Imagine (as a female if that's possible') being forcably milked (vampired), day after day for years on end, your children repeatedly taken away from you in some sort of kafkaesque illusion perverted excuse of a reality...Eventually of course the sick reality of the con breaks through the natural goddess protection...manefesting as various diseases...such as BSE.

Get it?

Indeed 'it is all about the land'. I.e. tribal tenure/systems and not 'it's mine' mentality (that acually has its origin in unbelievable evil dodge occult rituals that form the origin of how the christian temple in constructed).

In other words, this culture, this society, this system is fucked. Including the 'soft' green version....i.e. organic farms and police state regulated transport. Hey! anyone seen Prince Charles around? In reality these scum (the windsors) are head of the freemasons...the dodge occults behind the property centred mind/reality control mechanism of christian patriarchy...but never mind lets hope that this wanker can help change society (sick). And of course from the welsh viewpoint anything promoted by this usurping ponce is taboo straight off.

Allah Akbar

Don't take my name in vain new age assholes.

sainsburys chill centres

23.11.2004 16:11

maybe before you start tying yours selves to the railings etc,and start bragging about how much money sainsburys has lost, because of your demo.Perhaps you would care to remember that people work there to earn a living, and because of stupid people like you there jobs could be at risk,I personly do not agree with gm products but there must be a better way than putting people livlihoods at risk

Sainsburys New Shut Up Scheme

20.04.2005 16:52

GM Should be buried

01.09.2005 15:48

When ARE those who should know better going to stop playing God by interfering in natural evolutionary processes. If everyone supported outlets who are demonstrably anti-GM and anti-additives, the rest would have no option but to follow suit. Harangue your MP to put pressure on multinationals who would dictate that we all eat GM in the interests of higher profitability. Boycott the GM pedlars.

Think you should research a bit more!

30.05.2007 18:39

I know that this news is a bit outdated, but i was doing reasearch for uni work and noticed a few things which make this a bit of a pointless activity!

Firstly theres the fact that sainsbury's don't even deliver their own milk, at the moment its Robert Wiseman's and back at the time of this article it was dairy crest. In actual fact the only milk you would have been stopping getting to the stores would have been their own branded organic milk and branded milk (cravendale etc.) Which is obviously the complete opposite to your desired effect!

Also theres the fact that sainsburys was half way through their plan to phase out GM milk at the time, so in a way you would have delayed the process through the fact you would have diverted their attention and just pissed them off quite a bit!

But this is (was) a good cause and i do support it, i just think you should do your research a bit more and not try and just make it a publicity stunt!

Richard

No, I think you should research a bit more...

23.12.2007 01:21

Actually, you should do your research a bit more, and perhaps trust that we're not going to go to all that effort and risk without having researched thoroughly in advance!!

Sainsburys took what was in their depots to their own stores in trucks - how it gets to the depots is not relevant to the tactics used by us. Try standing outside your 'local' Sainsburys - you will not see differently branded trucks turning up with different brands - it'll be the one Sainsburys own truck. You're wrong.

And no, they were conducting tokenistic trials of GM-free milk at the time in a certain amount of their shops - it was priced higher than the rest of their milk; saying we might have "diverted their attention" is a bit naive I'm afraid. Sometimes you have to piss organisations off that are doing bad things, otherwise nothing would change.

It was no publicity stunt.
